Living the Dream: An Expat’s Guide to the Netherlands

Just before Christmas I had a chat with one of our clients, who made the big step to build himself a future in the Netherlands a couple of years ago.   I asked him if he maybe could share some insights and tips for those considering a similar step. He replied that he would put some experiences in writing and today I received his valuable and practical reaction:

Embracing the Dutch Lifestyle

Living in the Netherlands, particularly in the charming city of Amsterdam, has been an incredible journey filled with new experiences, cultural discoveries, and a quality of life that’s hard to match. As an expat who’s called this beautiful country home for several years, I want to share my enthusiasm and offer practical insights into what makes life in the Netherlands so exceptional.

The Dutch Way of Life

One of the things that quickly endeared me to the Netherlands is the Dutch way of life. Here are some aspects that I truly appreciate:

      1.   Cycling Paradise: Amsterdam, with its bike-friendly infrastructure, encourages everyone to hop on a bicycle. It’s not just a mode of transport; it’s a way of life. Riding along picturesque canals and through historic streets is both practical and delightful.

      2.   Cultural Diversity: The Netherlands, and Amsterdam in particular, is a melting pot of cultures. This diversity enriches daily life, from food to festivals, and fosters an atmosphere of inclusivity.

      3.   Work-Life Balance: The Dutch prioritize a healthy work-life balance. Generous vacation time and shorter workweeks contribute to a stress-free lifestyle.

Practical Tips for Expats

For those considering a move to the Netherlands, here are some practical tips to help you navigate life as an expat:

      1.   Learn Dutch: While many Dutch people speak English fluently, making an effort to learn Dutch goes a long way in integrating into society and building deeper connections.

      2.   Healthcare: The Dutch healthcare system is highly regarded. Ensure you’re properly insured and familiarize yourself with the healthcare options available.

      3.   Public Transport: Public transport in the Netherlands is efficient and well-connected. Consider investing in an OV-chipkaart for easy access to trams, buses, and trains.

      4.   Legal Residency: If you plan to stay long-term, understand the various residence permit options and the requirements for obtaining them.

Dutch Cuisine and Delights

No discussion about life in the Netherlands would be complete without mentioning Dutch cuisine. While Dutch food might not be as internationally famous as Italian or French cuisine, it has its own unique charm:

      1.   Stroopwafels: These thin waffle cookies with a caramel-like syrup filling are irresistible.

      2.   Haring: If you’re adventurous, try raw herring with onions and pickles – a Dutch delicacy.

      3.   Poffertjes: These tiny, fluffy pancakes dusted with powdered sugar are a sweet treat.

      4.   Cheese: The Netherlands is famous for its cheese. Don’t miss out on Gouda, Edam, or Leiden varieties.

Celebrating Dutch Culture

Embracing Dutch culture is an integral part of life here. From King’s Day celebrations with vibrant orange attire to Sinterklaas traditions, there’s always something to look forward to.

In conclusion, my life as an expat in the Netherlands has been an enriching adventure. The Dutch way of life, the warm and welcoming people, and the beautiful landscapes have made it a place I’m proud to call home. Whether you’re considering a move or already living here, I hope this glimpse into expat life in the Netherlands inspires you to make the most of your time in this wonderful country. Geniet van Nederland! (Enjoy the Netherlands!)
